Level 1 Design & Visual Communication
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr O. Richardson.
DVC creates so many different pathways.
Thinking of architecture, engineering, graphic design, or fashion design as a career? Then DVC is the subject for you.
The year 11 programme is broken up into projects where you will work on a portfolio that will gain you credits. You will learn the fundamental skills of design.
The best thing about DVC is you will be scaffolded through every task step by step with each task directly linking to your portfolios.
Course Overview
Term 1
Term 1 is generating a product design of a drink bottle. The key thing we are wanting to see is how you design this bottle with the idea of how can you design something better for people to use. We explore ways to improve a standard drink bottle more functional, but also look better. This assessment is a 5 credit external which means we do the work in class, and then at the end of the year we post it off as an external paper.
Term 2
Term two is using your same bottle design, but now drawing it technically. This means you will use the technical drawing equipment such as set squares, T squares and compasses and draw your design in isometric view technically. From here you will then learn how to do an orthographic projection of your bottle. Now don't worry if you have no idea what any of this means! I take you through step by step and make sure you do everything to get a great grade. You don't need to know any of this before you start the project.
Term 3
At this point we should have ten credits under your belt. We move onto our third and fourth assessment which is generating an outdoor seating design for school. The key part of this assessment is you need to have at least two influences that inspire your idea. We will look into famous architects, design movements, and cultural narratives as places to get ideas. We will make sculptures, blocks, paper and clay to help come up with ideas that we can then draw or model digitally. To then finish this project off, you just need to make a poster of your design and that is two 5 credit assessment's done!
Term 4
Completion of outstanding portfolio work and submission of any outstanding credits.
