Level 2 Design & Visual Communication

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr O. Richardson.

Growing on the skills you have learnt in Year 11. Year 12 is split up into two main projects. Product design and Spatial design. 

You will work through a design progress in designing a speaker and a year 13 common room, which will finish in using the laser cutter in making an amazing 3D model of your work.

For the second half of the year you will design your own sound system. Again, working through a design process to generate an original idea. 


Course Overview

Term 1
Term one we get straight into designing! Your task is to design a Year 13 Common Room for Hornby High. As a class we will work through a design process by generating ideas, developing them, looking at floor plans and construction to then resolve a final outcome. This assessment itself is 6 credits and then we pair a 3 credit external with it so you are doing the same amount of work, but for two assessments. Its a win, win!

Term 2
As you wrap up your common room project, we then move onto generating a presentation for your design. As you already will have a model designed digitally and floor plans, we then take this and generate a poster to showcase your design. Its like a sales poster for your Common Room. Along with this we will then make a physical model of your design to be paired with your poster.

Term 3
To finish up the term, we move onto product design. As you are now familiar with the design process and how you develop a design, we now apply the same method of designing to generating a sound system device. This could be a speaker, headphones or earphones. This is a 6 credit internal where you work through the same process to create a final outcome.

Term 4
Completion of outstanding portfolio work and submission of any outstanding credits.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
