Level 2 Design
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Whaea R. Clemence.
Why take Art Design?
Art Design is the exact method you would work in if you chose to be a graphic designer as a career. It is the design process and based on the real world of being a graphic designer. If you want to study graphic design at university of polytechnic, this is a required course. It is a preferred course for the future study of Architecture also.
If you want to take this course to build on your understanding of a creative system of making, this is also a really good choice. It supports DVC, building and engineering really well also, as well as providing you with a really solid base in researching visually, not just with words. This is a useful skill for any range of tertiary study.
Arts help train the eye and engage the brain differently from other academic subjects. Hand-to-eye coordination in this manner is fine motor-skill based and is shown to develop a part of our brain no other field would achieve. Visual Arts are not only supporting courses for many other aspects of society but a stand-alone aspect of careers and pathways in tertiary training; visual communication, design, spatial design, fashion design, product design, photography, fine arts, visual arts, ceramics, jewelry design, for instance.
Course Overview
Term 1
Developing your brief - who are you designing for, what is your 'company' or campaign all about? This is your Art Kaupapa in Design. Learning skills in Adobe Illustrator will be a big part of this term. You should finish the term with 2.1 in design, worth four internal credits. All work must be documented on your blog.
Term 2
During term two, you begin to develop the rest of the items you will need to fulfill your brief. Usually a poster design. Your poster and logo design fullfils your requirements for 2.2 (four internal credits). All work must be documented on your blog.
Term 3
During this term, you are putting your folio together using the best work from your research, logo, and poster design on board one and developing web page or other web-based or social media and sometimes three-dimensional product design or packaging. Photographic work is expected here in order to complete 2.3 (four internal credits) along with your design work. All work must be documented on your blog.
Term 4
By the end of week two of this term, your folio (12 external credits) is completed. It will highlight your best work from the year and clearly demonstrate the design process. It is assessed by your Art teachers first and check-marked in Wellington by NZQA. Following this, you will have an opportunity to resubmit for your internals if you missed out on them during the course of the year. All work must be documented on your blog.
