Careers and Gateway

Career education and guidance play a very essential role within Hornby High School. We strive to equip students to be work and learning ready by the time that they leave Hornby High School.

We offer Star  (Secondary Tertiary Alignment resource) courses for senior students. These courses provide opportunities for students to gain skills and experience in industry through one off external courses.

We also offer Dual enrolment which is a connection between tertiary providers and our school. These courses operate for one or two days a week and are trades-based, practical and relevant to students' learning pathways. Courses available to students are in the following areas:

  • Trades
  • Food & Hospitality
  • Hair & Beauty
  • Land Based Trades Academy (Animal care, Equine, Horticulture & Apiculture-beekeeping)
  • Automotive and Related Trades
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Sustainability & Outdoor Education

We also offer Gateway which is a TEC funded programme available to NZ residents or citizen aged 16 and over.

Gateway integrates workplace learning with school. Students must have a clear understanding of the Vocational Pathway they want to work within. Theory and Practical industry units are assessed towards specific National Certificates, NCEA and NZ Vocational Pathways Award.

We regularly have Universities and Polytechnics in to meet with our students. The careers team also take groups of students to careers events held off site at education providers or businesses.

We also have strong connections with local employers in the Hornby area and a lot of our students secure part time work through these connections.
