Teacher in Charge: Mr I. Rees.
Recommended Prior LearningIt is useful, but not essential, if you can operate machinery safely. You will need to understand the hazards in a practical environment and how to keep yourself safe.
Engineering is a practical subject where students complete a series of industry approved projects. These projects provide students with an opportunity to learn a wide range of practical engineering skills and techniques. Each engineering project encompasses the tools, material requirements, and competency and knowledge outcomes listed in the unit standards, providing a practical and stimulating experience for students. Students may also be offered additional tuition at SIT or ARA.
Term 1
For those new to the course you will need to complete a basic safety assessment worth 3 credits. For those that did Level 1 you have already completed this. Following the safety package there is a 3 week introduction to machinery theory which goes towards your Manufacturing Pathways for Schools (MaPS) assessment worth 7 credits.
The rest of the term you will be making a gear knob out of aluminum.
Term 2
There are two assessment booklets due this term as well as making the gear knob. The assessment looks at the fasteners and the common materials used in engineering. The focus on the term is lots of practical work especially on the lathe and milling machine.
Term 3
Term 3 is a good term to complete your practical and follow your machining skills with an assessment on hand tools. The majority of this course is practical and there are additional credits you can complete based on power tools and engineering metals
Term 4
We take this term to complete all the paper work and finish the manufacturing pathways theory work
Aeronautical Engineer, Air Force Aviator, Air Force Officer, Mechanical Engineering Technician, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, Product Assembler, Architectural Technician, Electronics Engineer, Automotive Electrician, Metal Worker, Boat Builder, Fabrication Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Building and Construction Manager
