Level 2 Biology

Why do plants and animals behave how they do? Want to know why this Riflebird is doing a dance?

Ever wondered how Humans ended up the way they are?  and how our bodies help us to survive?

These are all questions we will explore in Level 3 Biology, including a trip to Orana Park and a chance to design your own experiments around plant and animal responses.

Course Overview

Term 1
NCEA Assessment Title: "Biology 3.6 - Demonstrate understanding of trends in human evolution"
Credits: 4 (externally assessed)
This standard examines the biological and cultural changes that have occurred throughout human evolution, including evidence from fossils, DNA, and tools.

NCEA Assessment Title: "Biology 3.2 - Integrate biological knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue"
Credits: 3 (internally assessed)
Students integrate biological knowledge to develop an informed response to a socio-scientific issue, often related to conservation, genetic technology, or other contemporary topics.

Term 2
NCEA Assessment Title: "Biology 3.4 - Demonstrate understanding of how an animal maintains a stable internal environment"
Credits: 4 (externally assessed)
This standard focuses on how animals, including humans, maintain a stable internal environment. It covers the body's control systems for things like temperature, blood sugar, and fluid balance.

Term 3
NCEA Assessment Title: "Biology 3.3 - Demonstrate understanding of the responses of plants and animals to their external environment"
Credits: 5 (externally assessed)
This standard focuses on how living organisms react to their surroundings. It covers topics like plant hormones, animal behavior, and how organisms respond to environmental cues.

NCEA Assessment Title: "Biology 3.1 - Carry out a practical investigation in a biological context, with guidance"
Credits: 4 (internally assessed)

Term 4
