Level 3 Design

L3DES
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs A. Keene-Harris.

Why study Art Design at Level Three?

Art Design is the exact method you would work in if you chose to be a graphic designer as a career. It is the design process and based on the real world of being a graphic designer. If you want to study graphic design at university of polytechnic, this is a required course. It is a preferred course for the future study of Architecture also.

Art Design is a University Entrance course. That means 14 credits earned here will be one-third of your main university course credit requirements covered. If you are good at it, then it is sensible to use it to help you gain that extra qualification layer.

Arts help train the eye and engage the brain differently from other academic subjects. Hand-to-eye coordination in this manner is fine motor-skill based and is shown to develop a part of our brain no other field would achieve. Visual Arts are not only supporting courses for many other aspects of society but a stand-alone aspect of careers and pathways in tertiary training; visual communication, design, spatial design, fashion design, product design, photography, fine arts, visual arts, ceramics, jewelry design, for instance.

Course Overview

Term 1
Developing your brief - who are you designing for, what is your 'company' or campaign all about? This is your Art Kaupapa in Design. Learning skills in Adobe Illustrator AND handmade techniques will be a big part of this term. You will work on 3.1 (research - four internal credits for UE Literacy) and 3.2 (four internal credits, using design principles) simultaneously over term one. All work must be documented on your blog.

Term 2
During term two, you begin to develop the rest of the items you will need to fulfill your brief. Your practical work will be geared towards achieving 3.3 (four internal credits) this term. All work must be documented on your blog.

Term 3
During this term, you are putting together 2 more briefs that are relevant to your brand - web page or other web-based or social media and sometimes three-dimensional product design or packaging. A mixture of techniques and composition are expected here in order to complete 3.3 (four internal credits) along with all planning pages. You will also start to develop a portfolio booklet to showcase your work looking into design principles of book design (3.5). All work must be documented on your blog.

Term 4
By the end of week two of this term, your booklet will be ready to print for 3.5 (4 internal credits). It will highlight your best work from the year and clearly demonstrate the Kaupapa with skills you have learned. Following this, you will have an opportunity to resubmit for your internals if you missed out on them during the course of the year. All work must be documented on your blog.
