Course Description

Level 3 Health

Students will be able to learn about contemporary ethical issues, medical and health issues, laws and social justice, New Zealand based topics of concern as well as international health issues/topics. These are some of the topics that students chose to learn about in L3 Health in 2024 were- cancers, ACL tears and other sporting injuries, respiratory issues, mental health issues, birthing pain, sleep paralysis, abortion, euthanasia, the legalisation of marijuana, drug use, poverty and diseases. 

This course is very flexible and enables students to select their own topics and learn about their own interests and passions. The flexibility of this course therefore makes Health a relevant subject for the majority of students! The students who take this course become critical thinkers who are able to think with a socio ecological perspective. 

Health Scholarship will be offered to those who are achieveing at Excellence.

This course is open to all students. You do not need to have taken Level 1 or Level 2 Health to be able to take this course.

Course Overview

Term 1
To begin with we will learn about the key concepts needed to be successful at Level 3 Health. Next up, is learning about medical practices. You are able to select a health issue of your choice and then methods to treat the health issue. Here we look at western scientific medicine, Māori medicine and complementary and alternative treatments.

Term 2
Ethical dilemmas!? What is right or wrong? What do people believe in? What the consequences of our laws? We will learn about contemporary ethical issues in New Zealand. You get to explore an ethical issue of your choice for this unit.

Term 3
As a class we will select a health issue that is plaguing our country. Poverty? Drugs? STI's? Obesity? Cancer? Allergies? Sugar?

What is going on in the world? What is impacting health around the world? What can we do to make change?

Term 4
Externals are nearing- preparing for getting good grades is our focus!
