Level 2 English
Course Description

This Level 2 English programme is an academic course. It comprises a combination of internal and external Achievement Standards and is a pre-requisite to Level 3 English, a purely literature-based academic programme. This course grants university entrance literacy. It will also include the opportunity to gain the NCEA Literacy Co-requisite Level 1 Unit Standards (10 credits) for those students who still need it. Students will be expected to demonstrate critical thinking and perceptive analysis in their study of a range of written, visual and oral texts.
Course Overview
Term 1
The Level 2 English course is academic, with students making positive choices about their learning. Students will develop critical thinking and be able to articulate an appreciation of the world around them through their engagement with a range of written, visual and oral texts. Term 1 will comprise the teaching of general strategies and approaches designed to strengthen the development of literacy skills. Students will study a film(s) and do a close viewing of a scene(s) from the film. They will complete AS 91107 and work towards the writing portfolio (AS 91101) and the external assessment of studied visual texts (AS 91099.)
Term 2
In Term 2 students will study an extended written text as well as a range of short written and visual or oral texts. They will continue building a writing portfolio and work on analysing connections across texts. Students will complete AS 91104 and work towards the external assessment of studied written texts (AS 91098.) They will also be expected to construct and deliver a crafted and controlled oral presentation (AS 91102.) Students still needing to obtain Level 1 Literacy will complete the Literacy Reading and Writing CAAs (US 32403 and US 32405.)
Term 3
Term 3 will concentrate on writing. Students complete an Achievement Standard writing portfolio (AS 91101.) They will also work towards the external assessments of written texts AS 91098 and visual texts AS 91099. Any students still needing to obtain Level 1 Literacy will complete the Literacy Reading and Writing CAAs (US 32403 and US 32405.)
Term 4
Term 4 will be consolidation and preparation for the external examinations. Students will work towards the external assessments of written texts AS 91098 and visual texts AS 91099.
Recommended Prior Learning
The academic all Achievement Standard Level 2 course will require success at Level 1 in internal as well as external Achievement Standards.
