It is creative and critical, receptive and productive. The study of English encompasses learning the language, learning through the language, and learning about the language. Students of English engage with text-based activities of increasing complexity to become skilled and proficient speakers, listeners, readers, writers, presenters and viewers.

The study of English affirms language as integral to identity.  Language helps us to express ourselves and to connect with others through shared language use. Literature connects us to people with similar experiences, and to different life experiences and perspectives. At the heart of studying English in Aotearoa New Zealand, is developing the ability to make meaning of ideas in texts, and create meaning from texts, as well as positioning the audience and the purpose of the texts being studied or created.
