L3ENG

Level 3 English

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs D. Truter.

Level 3 English is an academic course comprising a combination of internal and external (assessed by exams) Achievement Standards that will enable students to demonstrate their critical literacy skills while personalising their learning. The course offers (UE) university entrance literacy. The English department aims to implement a personalised, self-directed, culturally responsive curriculum in which students will be given agency in exploring visual, oral and written language. Students will be allowed choices of texts through which they will gain proficiency in critical thinking and articulate their interpretation of world views and perspectives different to their own. They will respond critically to a range of concepts, reading a range of texts perceptively for a variety of purposes; writing proficiently in various genres; speaking and presenting eruditely in several contexts and viewing or listening astutely to texts to make insightful and original evaluations and judgements.

Course Overview

Term 1
Term 1 will focus on responding critically to specified aspects of studied visual texts and students will select a film director to begin an independent Auteur Study. They will begin delving into significant connections across texts. Students will also begin compiling a writing portfolio (AS 91475) and will practise essay writing for the external examination (AS 91473). They will create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text which develops, sustains, and structures ideas and be assessed against AS 91476.

Term 2
Term 2 will focus on responding critically to specified aspects of studied written texts through the study of New Zealand poetry and other international literature with the writing of practice essays for the external examination (AS 91472). Students will respond critically to significant connections across their studied and self-selected texts, and be assessed against AS 91478. They will continue their independent research into their auteur (AS 91480), and will work on their writing portfolio (AS 91475).

Term 3
Term 3 will focus on writing and students will produce a (portfolio) selection of fluent and coherent writing which develops, sustains, and structures ideas for the assessment of AS 91475. Students will also respond critically to significant aspects of visual texts through close reading, for the assessment of AS 91480. Students will practise essay writing for the external examinations (AS 91472 and AS 91473).

Term 4
Students will be able to resubmit any unsuccessful Achievement Standards, where the conditions for resubmission are met. Students will practise essay writing for the external examinations (AS 91472 and AS 91473).

Recommended Prior Learning

It is strongly recommended that students entered for Level 3 English have passed English at Level 2 with a combination of both internally and externally assessed Achievement Standards. An interest in critical literacy and the study of classical literature will be an advantage. Students who have been assessed against Unit Standards in the Level 2 vocational pathway will need to enrol in the Level 3 Vocational English course.
