Recommended Prior LearningIt is recommended that you have done Woodwork or Engineering in Year 9 or Year 10.
Students will apply the foundational knowledge and skills from their junior years to design and construct several pieces of furniture over the course of the year. There will be opportunities to learn new skills, techniques and use new technology and machines to create your furniture pieces.
Course Overview
Term 1
You’ll start the year by learning about the fundamental joints and hand tools essential for woodworking. This term is all about building a strong foundation as you dive into your first project. Alongside your practical work, you’ll begin compiling a portfolio that documents your growing knowledge and skills, which will be a valuable resource throughout the year.
Term 2
As Term 2 begins, you’ll focus on completing your first project, applying the techniques you’ve learned so far. Once your initial project is done, you’ll shift gears to researching and designing your next project—a bedside table. This will involve careful planning and creativity as you develop a design that’s both functional and uniquely yours.
Term 3
Term 3 is dedicated to the construction of your bedside table. This isn’t just any ordinary piece; you’ll incorporate a special design feature that makes your table stand out. Whether it’s a hidden compartment, an intricate inlay, or a custom finish, this feature will showcase your growing skill and personal flair in woodworking.
Term 4
In the final term, you’ll bring everything together by completing both your bedside table and your portfolio. This is the time to refine your work, ensuring that every project is finished to the highest standard. Your portfolio will also be completed, documenting all the knowledge, skills, and creative processes you’ve developed over the year. By the end of Term 4, you’ll have a body of work that reflects your progress and achievements in woodworking.
