Level 3 English - Vocational
L3ENV Course DescriptionTeacher in Charge: Mrs D. Truter.
The Level 3 Vocational English course offers students the opportunity to advance their language skills and make meaning of texts. It provides students with an understanding of different writing styles used to create meaning. This course will incorporate strategies and approaches designed to strengthen the development of literacy skills and will enable students to gain fifteen Level 3 credits, but this is not a UE approved course.
- Two specifically designated opportunities to attempt the Literacy Reading and/or Writing Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) will be offered to those students who have not yet obtained Level 1 Literacy.
- Vocational English follows the Unit Standard pathway begun at Level 2 and all standards are internally assessed.
- Indvidualised programmes may be created at the discretion of the teacher and based on students' results at level 2.
- Although there are no externally assessed standards as part of this course, students may complete one or more internally assessed Achievement Standards by prior consultation with the teacher and HOD.
Course Overview
Term 1
Term 1 will focus on reading and speaking activities. Students will learn the skills of reading for meaning and for a variety of purposes. They will begin forming personal responses to independently read texts having studied a range of texts from a variety of genres. They will begin the assessment of AS 91106 (a Level 2 Achievement Standard which contributes to UE literacy.) Students will participate in group and whole class discussions about their studied texts and to learn about each others' cultures. They will be assessed against US 1304: Communicate with people from other cultures.
Term 2
Term 2 will focus on writing, reading and speaking. Students will complete their personal responses to independently read texts and be assessed against AS 91106. They will write in plain English for the assessment of US 1279; and will create and deliver a fluent and coherent oral text which develops, sustains, and structures ideas for the assessment of AS 91476 or the Level 2 equivalent: Construct and deliver a crafted and controlled oral text (AS 91102).
Term 3
Term 3 will consolidate students' assessments commenced in Term 2 and students will be offered re-submission opportunities as appropriate. Students will learn to develop their ideas coherently and fluently, and write business correspondence to convey complex ideas and/or information for the assessment of US 11095.
Term 4
Term 4 will offer students the opportunity to consolidate their learning and complete any work not yet submitted for assessment. Further assessment opportunities might be offered to students for some of the standards at the discretion of the teacher and HOD.
