Yr 9&10 Course Selection Tips
← HomeCourse selection for Current Students in Years 8 & 9 (Year 9 & 10 in 2025) is due by ..........
You will have plenty of time during wānanga in the first two weeks of Term 4 to make your selections, but these will need to be approved by parents once you have selected them. You can take some time to browse courses and talk with your whānau about what you might like to do.
In year 9&10, some courses will be compulsory (you must do them), but you will also have some choices too.
Students in Year 9 and 10 for 2025 will take 2 option subjects - these will run in semesters (half year courses ), each for 2 hours per week.
Here are some tips for making good choices at course selection time:
✔ Choose courses that you think you will enjoy (if you enjoy it, you're more likely to do well).
✔ Choose courses that will challenge you. Push yourself, and try something new!
✔ Choose courses that will help prepare for what you might like to do in the senior school (it's okay if you don't have an idea yet though!)
✔ Ask plenty of questions. Your wānanga teacher, other teachers, and deans are happy to help. Also, ask your parents and caregivers...they're wise.
✖ Don't choose based on what your friends are doing (it's your education, not their's).
✖ Don't choose based on the teacher (which teacher teaches which course can change).
The following rules and restrictions apply to course selection for Year 9&10
All students in Year 9&10 will automatically be placed in a wānanga grouping, with strong links to previous groups to keep consistent in the pastoral care team.
All students are responsible for checking course information carefully before choosing. Students need to be aware of the kind of learning you will be doing, and other expectations of the course.
All students should browse courses using the 'Favourites' functions before committing to their final course selection. Final course selection is due Friday 20th October
ESOL students: all students who are ESOL funded will need to do a course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Mrs Talili, Mrs Cox, or your dean, will speak to you about this.
